“I drank to drown my sorrows, but the damned things learned how to swim.”
Frida Kahlo is one of the world's most renowned female painters. She is famous for her style which incrementally transformed from German influenced men suits towards a fully feminine Mexican style.
Frida Khalo was born on July 6 in 1907 in Coyocoán, Mexico. When Frida Khalo was a teenager, she was heavily injured in a bus accident. After that, she started painting and made her first self-portrait after a year. Her recovering isolated her from the outside world and this influenced her work since many of her paintings are self-portraits. As she explains:
"I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best.”
Besides making art, she became politically active and joined the Young Communist League and the Mexican Community Party. She married the famous communist artist Diego Rivera in 1929 and this became a volatile marriage. The Mexican culture always played an important role in her work as well as German influences. Her art was often described as ‘surrealistic’. Frida herself however, didn’t agree with this and argued that her paintings reflected her reality better than her dreams.
Frida Kahlo died in 1954 after some struggling and illness. Nowadays she is still seen as a feminist icon and her work is worldwide celebrated. She is one of the world’s most renowned female painters of history.Get your Kahlo Crop here.
